The only other place to get something to eat was the snack bar, but the guy working (?) behind the counter was so angry that he just sat at a table out in front and if you went down to get something to eat, you were taking your life into your own hands because he was not happy and wanted everyone on the train to know it. The air conditioning went out in the dining car, and they said it was too hot to cook, so they completely closed the dining car for lunch and dinner. The bathrooms were already disgusting, and the next morning none of them flushed at all, so it was a horrible mess. Lots of problems on the trip back home! The train was again over two hours late, and when it arrived, there were not enough seats for everyone, so we had to sit in the observation car until people got off the train. The bathrooms start out clean in Chicago, but since there is no separate ones for men or women, by the end of the trip it is so disgusting in all the restrooms that you can't even stand to walk in there. Once aboard the Empire Builder, things went o.k., although we were much later getting into East Glacier than was originally scheduled. We ended up taking a Greyhound to Chicago, while the rest of the group chartered a bus to take them to Quincy, Illinois so they could catch the train there. Amtrak offered to bus us there, but then realized we wouldn't make it in time to catch the Empire Builder to Montana. We were notified of this less than a week before our departure. The first leg of the trip was cancelled because they were doing track repairs. Louis to East Glacier in Montana with a group of about 14 people. If you have somewhere you need to be at a certain time, don't trust Amtrak to get you there.
